Incident 1. Mother’s will
옛날에 가난하지만 착하고 정직한 농부가 살았어요.
병든 어머니를 모시면서 남의 땅에 농사를 지어 주고
품삯을 받아 어렵게 살았지요.
어느 날, 어머니는 농부에게 "내 제사상에 생전에 실컷
못 먹어 본 흰 쌀밥 한 그릇 놓아 주렴."이라는 유언을
남기고 돌아가시게 되었어요.
Once upon a time there was a poor but good and honest farmer.
He took care of his sick mother and hired himself out on others’ farm.
One day, his mother said to him, "Please let me have a bowl of white rice on my ceremonial table that I have never had before."
It was her last words.
Incident 2. The farmer who stole rice
그로부터 일 년이 지나 어머니의 제삿날이 찾아왔어요.
농부는 여전히 가난해서 제사상을 차릴 형편이 되지
못했어요. 그때 농부는 자기가 대신 농사를 지어 주는
주인의 논을 떠올렸어요. "내가 피땀 흘려 가꾼 벼인데..."라는 생각과 "주인의 허락 없이는 벼를 가질 수
없어."라는 생각이 부딪혔어요. 하지만 농부는 결국 주인의 논에서 벼를 한 단 베어 어머니의 제삿법을 지었어요.
A year later, the anniversary of his mother’s death came.
The farmer was still poor and couldn’t afford to prepare the table for a memorial ceremony.
At that time, his owner's rice paddies came to his mind. The thought of "It is the rice that I've been working on with blood and sweat..." and "I can't take it without the permission of my owner." were collided.
However, he eventually cut a single piece of rice from the owner's paddy and held ancestral rites for his mother.
Incident 3. The Farmer's Guilt
농부는 죄책감에 농사를 더 열심히 지었고, 덕분에 땅 주인은 누구보다도 많은 곡식을 거두었어요. 그러나 주인은 농부의 품삯을 조금도 올려 주지 않았고, 농부는 여전히 가난했어요.
다음해 어머니의 제삿날에도 농부는 어쩔 수 없이 주인의 땅에서 벼를 베어야 했어요. 농부는 제사를 드리며 "우리 주인 어른이 복을 많이 받게 해주세요."라며 기도했어요.
The farmer worked harder on the farm out of guilt, and thanks to his effort, the owner got more grain than anyone else. But the owner didn't raise his wages at all, and he was still poor.
On mother's anniversary of following year, he was forced to cut rice from his owner's land. He performed a memorial service and prayed, "Let our landowner be blessed.“
Incident 4. The landowner who learned the truth
주인은 벼가 한 단씩 없어진다는 사실을 알고 있었어요. 삼 년째 제삿날에도 농부는 벼를 베어 갔고, 진실을 밝히기 위해 숨어 있던 주인이 이를 보게 되었어요. 정직하기로 소문난 농부의 행동에 주인은 놀랐어요. 주인은 농부를 몰래 따라가 농부가 정성껏 제사상을 차리고, 본인을 위해 기도하는 모습을 보고 감동을 받았어요.
The landowner knew that a sheaf of rice would disappear every year. Even on the third anniversary of his mother’s death, he cut down the rice, and the owner, who was hiding to reveal the truth, saw it. He was surprised that the farmer was known for his honesty. He followed him secretly, and saw him setting up a memorial service with all his heart. He was touched to the farmer praying for him.
Incident 5. The farmer who became the owner of the land
주인은 "내가 삼 년 동안 논을 한 섬지기나 새로 살 수 있었던 건 모두 농부 덕분이구나."하고 깨달았어요, 주인은 농부를 불렀고, 이에 농부는 주인집에 들어서자마자 용서를 구했어요. 하지만 주인은 "자네와 같은 사람이 참말 복을 받아야 옳겠지. 작은 잘못을 크게 뉘우치고, 돌아가신 부모님께도 효성스런 마음이 변하지 않으니 말일세."라며 논 한 섬지기의 땅 문서를 주었어요.
이렇게 가난하지만, 정직한 마음을 잃지 않았던 농부는
당당하게 논 한 섬지기의 주인이 되었답니다.
The landowner realized, "It's all thanks to the farmer that I've been able to buy 2,000 plots of paddy field for three years," and called the farmer. He asked for forgiveness as soon as he entered his house. However, the owner gave him a document on his land, saying, "A person like you should be truly blessed. You regret your small mistakes and haven't changed filial heart to your dead mother."
The farmer who was poor but never lost his honest heart, became the landowner.
