Incident 1. A pond snail discovered by the bachelor
옛날 어느 마을에 나이가 서른이 넘도록 장가를 못간 총각이 혼자 농사를 지으며 살고 있었어요. 하루는 총각이 논에서 김을 매다가 혼잣말로 "이 농사지어서 누구랑 먹고 사나."라고 말했어요. 그랬더니 갑자기 어디선가 "나랑 먹고살지."라는 소리가 들렸어요.
주위를 둘러보아도 아무도 없어서 의아해하던 총각은 살금살금 소리 나는 쪽으로 이동했어요. 그런데 사람은 없고 논둑 밑에 커다란 우렁이 한 마리만 있었지요. 총각은 그 우렁이를 집으로 가져갔어요.
Once upon a time, in a village, a bachelor who was over 30 years old had farmed alone. One day, while weeding a field, the bachelor said to himself, "Who do I live with by farming?" Then, suddenly somewhere, he heard the voice, "You're going to live with me."
The bachelor, who looked around and wondered because there was no one around, stealthily approached toward the sound. But there was nothing but a big pond snail under the ridge. he took the pond snail home.
Incident 2. A delicious dining prepared by someone
총각은 우렁이를 물 항아리 안에 넣어뒀어요. 그리고 그 이튿날, 일을 하다가 점심을 먹으려고 집에 와 보니 밥이 맛있게 차려져 있었어요. 그 이튿날에도 힘들게 일을 하고 점심을 먹으러 집에 가니 따뜻하고 맛있는 밥이 차려져 있었어요.
그 다음 날도, 또 그 다음 날도 점심밥이 맛있게 준비되어 있었답니다.
The bachelor put the pond snail in a water pot. Next day, he came home to have lunch while working, and there was delicious food on the tables. The next day, he worked hard and went home for lunch, also a warm and delicious dining was prepared.
The next day, and the next day, wonderful lunch was set all the time.
Incident 3. Meeting with the pond snail wife
총각은 너무 궁금한 나머지, 하루는 일을 갔다가 일찍 들어와서 숨어 있었어요. 점심때가 되니까 물 항아리 안에서 어여쁜 색시가 나오더니 밥을 차리고는 물 항아리 속으로 다시 들어가려는 게 아니겠어요?
총각은 얼른 그녀를 붙잡았어요. 그러자 그녀는 "아직 때가 되지 않았으니 조금만 기다려 주세요. 그렇지 않으면 반드시 슬픈 이별이 있을 것이에요."라고 말했어요. 총각은 그녀를 놓아주지 않았고, 결국 둘은 결혼하여 함께 살게 되었어요.
One day, the bachelor was so curious that he went to work and came back early to hide. At lunchtime, a pretty bride came out of the water pot, and went back into the pot after setting the meal.
He grabbed her quickly. Then she said, "It's not the time yet, so please wait a little. Otherwise, there will definitely be a sad breakup." The bachelor didn't let her go, and eventually the two got married and lived together.
Incident 4. The danger came to pond snail wife
하루는 집에서 점심밥을 차려 놓고 기다리던 색시가 남편이 오지 않자 점심 광주리를 머리에 이고 들로 나갔어요. 가다보니 저 멀리서 고을 원님이 가마를 타고 오고 있었어요. 색시는 풀덤불 속에 가만히 숨어서 지켜보고 있었어요.
그런데 그녀가 숨어 있는 풀덤불에서 밝은 빛이 환하게 퍼져 나왔어요. 그걸 본 원님은 포졸에게 저기 가서 무엇이 있는지 보고, 사람이라면 데리고 오라고 말했어요. 결국 색시는 원님에게 잡혀가게 되었어요.
One day, the pond snail wife, who had been waiting for him after preparing lunch, went out to the field with a basket on her head. As she walked, a governor was riding a palanquin from far away. She was watching in the bushes.
But a bright light came out from the bushes. Seeing it, the governor told a soldier to go over there and see what was there, and bring he or she if it was a person. Finally, the bride was taken by him.
Incident 5. The painful farewell of the husband and the pond snail wife
집에 돌아온 남편은 색시가 없어진 것을 알고 놀랐어요. 이리 뛰고 저리 뛰고 찾아다니다가 원님에게 잡혀간 것을 알고는 몸부림치며 울었어요. 때가 되지 않으면 슬픈 이별이 있을 것이라던 색시 말이 생각나 후회했지만 상황은 바뀌지 않았어요.
남편은 울다가 울다가 죽어서 파랑새가 되었어요. 색시도 울다가 울다가 죽어서 파랑새가 되었어요. 사람들은 그 뒤로 파랑새 두 마리가 구슬프게 울며 함께 날아다니는 모습을 자주 보게 되었답니다.
When the husband came back home, he was surprised to find out that the wife had disappeared. he looked for her here and there, and when he knew that she was taken by the governor, he struggled and cried. He regretted it because of the wife’s word that there would be a sad breakup if the time didn't come, but the situation did not change.
He cried and cried, and finally died and became a blue bird. Also the wife cried so much that died and became a blue bird. Since then, people have often seen two blue birds crying sadly and flying together.
