Incident 1. Invitation of a resourceful fox
스웨덴의 어느 마을에 집에서 기르는 동물들을 괴롭히는,닐스라는 장난꾸러기 남자아이가 살고 있었어요. 어느 날.닐스는 방 안에서 집요정을 발견하고 잠자리채로 잡아 이리저리 흔들며 괴롭혔어요. 화가 난 집요정은 닐스에게 마법을걸어 자신처럼 작아지게 했어요. 겁이 난 닐스는 집요정을 찾아 집 안 구석구석을 찾아 보다가 마당으로 나갔는데, 그곳에서 자신이 괴롭혔던 동물들을 만났어요. 동물들은 닐스를비웃으며 괴롭혔고, 닐스는 허겁지겁 도망을 쳤어요.
In a village in Sweden, there lived a playful little boy called Nils, who bullied
the animals at his home. One day, Nils found a housefairy in his room and
caught him with his butterfly net to shake it all around.
The angry housefairy put a spell on Nills to make Nils small like himself. Nils got
scared, and went outside while trying to find the housefairy. There, he met the
animals that he bullied. The animals now made fun of Nils and laughed at him, so Nils quickly ran away.
Incident 2. The Beginning of the Journey with Morten
그때 하늘을 올려다보니 기러기 떼가 줄지어 날아가고 있었어요. 기러기들은 따뜻한 봄이 되어 북쪽 지방인 라플란드로 가는 중이었어요. 기러기들은 마당에 있는 거위들에게 함께 가자고 했고, 이 말에 하얀 거위 모르텐이 기러기들을 따라 날아가려고 했어요. 닐스는 모르텐을 말리려 목에 매달렸고, 모르텐은 닐스를 태운 채 하늘로 높이 날아올랐어요. 처음 하는 여행에 모르텐이 지치자, 닐스는 모르텐이 물을 마실 수 있도록 호숫가로 밀고 갔어요. 이에 대한 보답으로 모르텐은 날스에게 물고기를 잡아주었고, 둘은 친구가 되어 라플란드까지의 여행을 함께하기로 했어요.
Then, when he looked up at the sky, there was a flock of wild geese fying in a row. As it became spring, the wild geese were heading to Lapland, which was in North. The wild geese asked the geese in the yard to join them, and the with goose Morten tried to fly along with the flock. Nils hung around Morten's neck to stop him, but Morten flew up in the sky with Nils hanging on to him. Morten got tired of his first trip, so Nils led him to the lakeside to let Morten have a sip of water. In return, Morten offered fish to Nils, and they decided to become a good company for their trip to Lapland.
Incident 3. Continued travel and meeting with Dunpin
여행 중 어느 날 밤, 닐스는 여우 한 마리가 기러기를 물고 달아나려는 것을 발견했어요. 닐스는 여우의 꼬리를 힘껏 잡아 당겼고, 여우는 기러기를 놓치고 말았어요. 닐스가 여우를 피해 나무 위로 올라가자, 닐스가 내려오기를 기다리는 여우를 기러기들이 멀리 꾀어내어 닐스는 무사히 도망칠 수 있었어요. 그 후, 닐스 일행은 욀란드 섬에 도착했어요. 닐스와 모르텐은 그곳에서 날개를 다친 암기러기 던핀을 만났어요. 닐스는 어긋나 있던 던핀의 날개 뼈를 제자리로 맞춰 주었고, 그 뒤로 던핀도 함께 여행하게 되었어요.
One night during the trip, Nils found a fox trying to run away with wild goose in his mouth. Nils pulled the fox's tail as hard as he could, and the fox missed the wild goose. Nils climbed up the tree to escape from the fox, while the other wild geese tricked the fox that was waiting for Nils to come down. Thanks to this, Nils could safely escape from the fox.
After that, Nils and the animals arrived at an island called Öland. There, Nils and
Morten met Dunfin, a female wild goose. Nils helped put the wing bones of Dunfin to the right place, and Dunfin became one of their company.
Incident 4. A crisis encountered during a trip
닐스 일행이 계속 북쪽으로 날아가던 중, 질투심에 던핀의 날개를 부러뜨린 던핀의 언니 빙스쾨나가 나타났어요. 기러기들이 자신을 쫓아내려고 하자, 빙스쾨나는 닐스를 물고 도망쳤어요. 그때 어디선가 총소리가 들렸고, 깜짝 놀란 빙스쾨나가 닐스를 놓쳐버려 닐스는 바다로 떨어졌어요. 바다에 빠질 뻔한 닐스를 어부가 잡았지만, 닐스를 집요정으로 착각한 어부는 야외 박물관의 관리인에게 닐스를 팔았어요. 관리인은 다행히 닐스를 풀어주었어요. 닐스는 박물관에서 여행 중 만났던 독수리 고르고가 우리 속에 갇혀 있는 것을 발견했어요. 닐스는 우리의 철망에 구멍을 내어 고르고를 풀어주었고, 고르고는 이에 대한 보답으로 닐스를 기러기 무리가 있는 라플란드까지 데려다 주었어요.
While Nils and the animals were on their way to North, Dunfin's sister Binskkona, who broke Dunfin's wing in jealousy, appeared. Binskkona took Nils and ran when the wild geese tried to chase her away. Then, a bell rang from somewhere. Binskkona got surprised of it and let go of Nils. Nils almost fell in to the ocean, but one fisherman caught him.
However, he thought Nils was a housefairy, so he sold Nils to a janitor of a museum. The janitor set Nils free thankfully. At the museum, Nils saw that Gorgo the eagle was caught inside a cage. Nils made a hole to the cage and set
Gorgo free. Gorgo, in return, flew Nils to Lapland where the flock of wild geese
were.
Incident 5. Nils returned to his family
닐스는 라플란드에 도착하여 모르텐과 기러기들을 다시 만났어요. 던핀과 모르텐은 새끼 여섯 마리의 엄마, 아빠가 되어 있었어요. 이후 시간이 흘러 라플란드가 겨울이 되자, 기러기들은 다시 따뜻한 남쪽으로 날아가기로 했어요. 닐스와 모르텐은 기러기들을 따라 집으로 돌아갔어요. 닐스의 어머니는 새끼들을 데려온 모르텐을 보고 시장에 내다 팔려고 했어요. 이를 본 닐스가 다급하게 "엄마, 모르텐을 죽이면 안돼요. 모르텐은 내 친구라고요!"라고 소리치며 어머니를 말렸어요. 그 순간, 닐스의 몸이 커지더니 본래의 모습으로 돌아왔어요. 모르텐을 아끼는 닐스의 착한 마음씨 덕분에 마법이 풀린 것이었답니다.
Nils arrived at Lapland and met Morten and the flock again. Dunfin and Morten
were now a parent to six baby geese. Later when it became winter in Lapland,
the wild geese decided to fly back South. Nils and Morten followed the wild geese back to their home. Nils's mom tried to sell Morten's babies. But then, Nils
shouted, "Mom, don't kill Morten. He is my friend!"
Suddenly, Nils grew back normal. The spell on him broke because of Nil's warm heart that cared Morten.
