Incident 1. Love and Farewell
옛날 하늘 나라에 소를 잘 키우는 총각 견우가 살았어요. 이웃 나라에는 베를 잘 짜는 처녀 직녀가 살았지요. 일에만 빠져 결혼도 하지 않는 견우와 직녀를 보고 옥황상제는 직접 그 둘을 맺어 주었어요. 한눈에 사랑에 빠진 견우와 직녀는 날이 가고 달이 갈수록 점점 더 서로를 사랑했어요. 그 둘은 날마다 함께 지내느라 할 일을 게을리하고 말았어요.
견우는 소를 몰지 않고, 직녀는 베를 짜지 않는다는 소문이 옥황상제의 귀에도 들어갔어요. 화가 난 옥황상제는 견우와 직녀를 불러 불호령을 내렸답니다. 바로 견우는 은하수 동쪽, 직녀는 은하수 서쪽에서 멀리 떨어져 살라는 것이었어요.
Once upon a time, in heaven, there was Gyeonwoo, a single man who was good at raising cows. In the neighbor country, there was Jingnyuh, a single woman who was good at weaving. Seeing Gyunwoo and Jingnyuh, who were so absorbed in their work that they never married, the Grate Jade Emperor personally matched them.
Gyunwoo and Jingnyuh, who fell in love at a glance, loved each other more and more as the days went by and the months went by. The two have neglected their duties because they have been together every day.
Rumor, Gyunwoo didn't drive cows and Jingnyuh didn’t weave, got in the Jade Emperor's ear. The angry Jade Emperor called Gyunwoo and Jingnyuh and scolded them. He ordered them to live apart in the east and the west of the Milky Way, respectively.
Incident 2. Only one day of the year
견우와 직녀는 떠나는 길에, 다시는 만날 수 없을지도 모른다는 생각에 자꾸만 뒤를 돌아보았어요. 견우는 예전처럼 소를 몰고 농사를 지었지만, 직녀의 아름다운 얼굴과 고운 목소리가 아른거려 매일매일 슬퍼했어요. 직녀도 예전처럼 다시 베를 짰지만, 견우가 생각나 눈물을 흘렸어요.
그렇게 제대로 먹지도 못하고 자지도 못하여 야위어 가는 견우와 직녀를 보다 못한 선녀들이 옥황상제에게 간청했어요. 결국 옥황상제는 칠월 칠석 하루만은 은하수에서 둘이 만나도 좋다고 마지못해 허락했지요.
On the way off, Gyunwoo and Jingnyuh, kept looking back because they thought they might never meet again. Gyunwoo drove cows and farmed like before, but he was sad every day because the weaver's beautiful face and good voice were lingered. Jingnyuh, also re-weaved like before, but she cried because of memory of Gyunwoo.
They wasted away because they hadn’t eat or sleep well. The fairies who were unable to remain a mere spectator, begged the Jade Emperor. Eventually, he reluctantly allowed them to meet in the Milky Way for just one day on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.
Incident 3. Love that can only be looked at
Gyeonwoo and Jingnyuh, who were waiting for the day, finally ran toward the Milky Way. The road to the Milky Way was long and rough, but they were just excited.
Finally they reached the Milky Way and shouted each other's names loudly, but they couldn't get close because the big Milky Way was flowing with waves. Gyeonwoo and Jingnyuh wept uncontrollably. Tears quickly became rain, and dark clouds came, thundering and lightning began to strike.
Incident 4. Animals made a solution
하늘 나라 아래에 있는 세상에도 큰 비가 내리기 시작했어요. 어찌나 비가 많이 오던지 밭은 물에 잠기고, 강둑은 무너지고, 집은 빗물에 떠내려갔어요. 그럼에도 비는 그칠 줄 모르고 계속 쏟아졌답니다.
동물들은 물난리를 피해 높은 언덕에 모여 해결책을 궁리하고 있었어요. 그때 까마귀와 까치가 좋은 아이디어를 냈어요. 바로 한꺼번에 날아올라 몸을 이어 은하수에 다리를 만들자는 의견이었어요. 견우와 직녀가 만나면 비가 그칠 것이라고 생각한 것이었지요.
It began to rain heavily in the world below the heaven. How much it rained, the fields were flooded, the riverbanks collapsed, and the houses were swept away by the rain. Nevertheless, the rain continued to pour.
Animals were gathering on high hills to avoid the water crisis and trying to figure out a solution. Then the crow and magpie came up with a good idea. The idea was to fly up at once and connect their body to make a bridge over the Milky Way. They thought it would stop raining when Gyunwoo and Jingnyuh met.
Incident 5. Finally met each other
이듬해 칠월 칠석이 되었고, 견우와 직녀는 어김없이 은하수에 도착했어요. 그러자 사방에서 까마귀와 까치들이 모여들어 은하수보다 긴 다리를 놓았어요. 견우와 직녀는 세상에서 가장 아름다운 다리 위에서 힘차게 끌어안으며 기뻐했답니다.
칠월 칠석에는 하루 세 번 비가 내린다는 전설이 전해지고 있어요. 아침에 오는 비는 견우와 직녀가 서로를 애타게 그리워하는 눈물이고, 낮에 오는 비는 다시 만나 흘리는 기쁨의 눈물이고, 밤에 오는 비는 헤어지며 아쉬워하는 이별의 눈물이라는 전설 말이에요.
In the following seventh day of the seventh lunar month, Gyunwoo and Jingnyuh arrived at the Milky Way again. Then crows and magpies gathered from all sides and built a longer bridge than the Milky Way. Gyunwoo and Jingnyuh were delighted, hugging each other on the most beautiful bridge in the world.
There is a legend that it rains three times a day on Chilseok. The rain in the morning is the tears that Gyeonwoo and Jingnyuh yearn for each other, the rain during the day is the tears of joy that meet again, and the rain at night is the tears of parting and missing.
