Incident 1. The hardships of Heungbu's family
옛날 어느 마을에, 심술이 고약하기로 소문난 형 놀부와 마음씨가 매우 착한 동생 흥부가 살고 있었어요. 세월이 흘러 부모님이 돌아가시자 욕심 많은 놀부는 재산을 혼자 다 가지고 싶었어요. 그래서 흥부에게 식구들을 데리고 집에서 나가라고 했어요. 추운 겨울만이라도 지내게 해달라는 간곡한 흥부의 부탁을 들은 채도 안 하는 놀부 때문에 결국 흥부는 가족들을 데리고 집을 나와야 했어요.
흥부네 가족은 이곳저곳 떠돌다가 아무도 살지 않는 낡은 빈 집에 들어가 살았고, 남의 집 일을 도우며 하루하루 힘들게 살았답니다. 배가 고프다는 자식들을 위해 흥부는 놀부 네로 찾아가 먹을 것을 구걸했지만, 오히려 뺨만 얻어 맞고 나왔어요.
Once upon a time in a village, there were Nolbu, a older brother who was known to be mean, and Heungbu, a younger brother who was very kind. Over the years, when their parents passed away, greedy Nolbu wanted to inherit a legacy alone. So he kicked Heungbu and his family out of the house. Nolbu ignored Heungbu's earnest request to let him live only in the cold winter.
Finally Heungbu had to leave the house with his family.
They wandered from place to place and lived in an old empty house, doing others’ housework. For hungry children, Heungbu begged Nolbu for a meal, but he only got slapped.
Incident 2. Heungbu's warm heart
추운 겨울이 지나고, 따뜻한 봄바람과 함께 제비가 흥부네로 찾아왔어요. 흥부네 집 처마에 둥지를 튼 제비는 새끼 제비들과 함께 살았답니다. 그러던 어느 날, 새끼 제비를 잡아먹으려는 구렁이 한 마리가 나타났어요. 흥부는 얼른 구렁이를 쫓아내고, 둥지에서 떨어져 다리가 부러진 새끼 제비를 정성스레 치료해 주었어요. 덕분에 그 제비는 다시 날 수 있었고, 가을이 되자 따뜻한 남쪽 나라로 떠났어요.
시간이 지나 다시 봄이 되었고, 작년에 그 제비가 돌아와 흥부 부부 주위를 맴돌다가 박씨를 떨어뜨리고 갔어요.
After the cold winter, a swallow came to Heungbu with a warm spring breeze. The swallow, who nestled in the eaves of Heungbu's house, lived with the baby swallows. Then one day, a big snake tried to eat the swallow. Heungbu quickly kicked out the snake and treated the swallow carefully, who fell from the nest and broke his leg. Thanks to Heungbu’s help, the swallow was able to fly again. By fall, he left for the warm south.
Time passed and it became spring again, the swallow hovered around Heungbu couple and dropped a gourd seed.
Incident 3. Swallow repaid Heungbu
흥부는 기뻐하며 박씨를 심고 정성껏 가꾸었어요. 어느덧 시간이 지나, 흥부네 집 지붕에는 커다란 박이 주렁주렁 열렸어요. 박을 타서 죽을 끓여 먹을 생각으로 흥부네 가족은 노래를 부르며 신나게 박을 타기 시작했어요.
첫 번째 박을 가르자, 안에 있던 커다란 나무 상자에서 쌀이 쏟아져 나왔어요. 두 번째 박을 가르자, 비단과 황금이 한가득 들어 있었어요. 세 번째 박을 열자, 수십 명의 목수와 하인들이 우르르 나와 기와집을 뚝딱뚝딱 지어 주고 사라졌어요. 흥부네 가족은 기뻐서 덩실덩실 춤을 추었답니다.
Heungbu planted the gourd seeds with joy and carefully cared for them. As time went by, the roof of Heungbu's house was filled with large gourds. Heungbu's family started to cut the gourd while singing, thinking of making gourd porridge.
Cutting the first gourd, rice poured out of the big wooden box inside. Cutting the second gourd, it was full of silk and gold. Cutting the third gourd, dozens of carpenters and servants rushed out, built a tile-roofed house, and disappeared. Heungbu's family danced with joy.
Incident 4. Nolbu's greed
이 소식을 들은 놀부는 당장 흥부네로 찾아가 부자가 된 방법에 대해 물어보았어요. 흥부는 놀부에게 그동안 있었던 일을 모두 이야기해 주었고, 놀부는 집에 돌아오자마자 처마 밑의 제비 둥지에서 새끼 제비 한 마리를 꺼내 다리를 부러뜨렸어요. 그러고는 제비를 치료해 주고 다시 둥지에 넣었어요.
이듬해 봄이 되자, 제비가 놀부에게 박씨를 물어다 주었어요. 그 박씨를 심은 놀부네 집에도 탐스러운 박들이 주렁주렁 열렸지요. 곧 부자가 될 거라는 기대를 가득 품은 놀부네 부부들은 신이 나서 덩실덩실 춤을 추었어요.
Hearing this news, Nolbu immediately went to Heungbu and asked how to be rich. Heungbu told Nolbu everything that had happened, and as soon as he got home, he took a baby swallow out of the nest under the eaves and broke his leg. Then he treated the swallow and put him back in the nest.
In the following spring, the swallow gave Nolbu a gourd seed. Even Nolbu's house were filled with plump gourds. Nolbu's couples, full of expectations that they would soon become rich, danced joyfully.
Incident 5. The consequences of greed, the resulting lessons
그러나 놀부 부부의 기대와는 달리, 첫 번째 박에서는 징그러운 벌레들이 가득했어요. 두 번째 박에서는 몸집 큰 장정들이 우르르 나오더니 놀부네 집 물건들을 다 가지고 가 버렸어요. 놀부 부부는 마지막은 비단과 금은보화가 나올 거라며 세 번째 박을 갈랐어요. 그러자 갑자기 눈앞에 어마어마하게 큰 장수가 나타나 호통을 쳤고, 겁에 질린 놀부 부부는 남은 재산을 모두 바칠 테니 목숨만은 살려달라며 빌었어요. 간신히 목숨을 건졌지만 빈털터리가 되고 말았답니다.
갈 곳 없는 놀부 부부는 흥부에게 용서를 구했고, 흥부는 따뜻하게 맞아 주었어요. 그 후 형제는 오래오래 사이좋게 살았답니다.
However, contrary to the Nolbu couple's expectations, the first gourd was full of disgusting bugs. In the second gourd, big men rushed out and took all the things from Nolbu's house. The Nolbu couple split the third gourd, saying that silk and treasures would come out at the end. Then suddenly, a huge general appeared in front of them and shouted. Frightened Nolbu couple prayed to save their lives, saying that they would give all their remaining property. They managed to save their life, but became broke.
The Nolbu couple, who had nowhere to go, asked Heungbu for forgiveness, and Heungbu welcomed warmly. After that, the brothers lived together happily ever after.
