Incident 1. Good younger brother and greedy older brother
옛날 옛적 어느 마을에 한 형제가 있었어요. 착하고 효심이 깊은 아우와 욕심 많은 형이었죠. 아버지가 돌아가시자마자 형이 재산을 몽땅 차지했지만 아우는 불평도 없이 어머니를 모시고 산에서 나무를 하며 열심히 살았어요. 찬바람이 쌩쌩 부는 추운 겨울이 되기 전, 아우가 산에서 땔나무를 하고 있었는데 땍때구루루. 개암 한 톨이 굴러왔어요. 그러다 또 한 톨, 또 한 톨. 아우는 하나는 어머니께, 하나는 형님께, 하나는 자기가 먹기로 하고 개암을 주머니에 넣었어요.
Once upon a time, there was the brothers in a village. Nice and filial younger brother and greedy older brother. As soon as their father died, older brother took all the property, and younger brother lived hard with his mother in the mountains without complaining. Before the cold winter, the younger brother was cutting down the trees and there was a rolling sound. A nut rolled over. And then another one, another. He put them in his pocket, deciding to give one to his mother, one to his brother, and one to himself.
Incident 2. Goblin house and goblin bat
아이코, 그런데 이걸 어째. 산을 다 내려오기도 전에 날이 어두워지고 말자, 아우는 하는 수 없이 산 중턱에 있는 빈집에서 하룻밤을 보내기로 했어요. 허기진 아우가 개암 한 개를 막 깨물려고 할 때, 왁자그르르. 갑자기 도깨비들이 우르르 몰려왔어요. 깜짝 놀란 아우는 후다닥 대들보 위로 올라가 숨었지요. 대청마루에서 신나게 놀면서 도깨비들이 “금 나와라 와라, 뚝-딱” “은 나와라 와라. 뚝-딱” 하고 소리치자, 놀랍게도 도깨비 방망이를 두드리며 말하는 것마다 무엇이든 뚝딱뚝딱 나왔어요.
Oops, What should he do? It got dark before he came down the mountain. He had no choice but to spend the night in an empty house in the middle of the mountain. When the hungry brother was about to bite the nut, there was a noisy sound.
Suddenly, goblins came rushing in. Surprised, he quickly climbed onto the beam and hid. In the living room, the goblins said with joy, “Come out, come out, Gold. Dduck-dak.”, “Come out, come out, Silver, Dduck-dak.” Surprisingly, whatever they tapped the bat and said, it popped out.
Incident 3. The goblin bat earned with the nuts
아우는 대들보 위에서 벌벌 떨며 도깨비들을 지켜보고 있다가 자기도 모르게 입 안의 개암을 와작! 하고 깨물고 말았어요. 개암 껍데기 깨지는 소리가 대청마루에 쩌렁쩌렁 울려퍼졌고, 도깨비들은 집이 와자작!하고 무너지는 줄 알았지요. “대들보가 무너진다. 어서 도망가자.”라고 소리치면서, 도깨비들은 가지고 있던 것을 모두 내팽개치고 허둥지둥 달아나기 바빴어요. 혼자 남은 아우는 도깨비들이 두고 간 금은보화와 방망이를 가지고 산을 내려와 방망이로 대궐 같은 집도, 꿀맛 같은 음식도 뚝딱 만들어내는 부자가 되었지요.
The brother was shivering on the beam and watching the goblins, and without realizing it, he bit the nut in his mouth. The crunch of the nut resonated loudly in the living room, and the goblins thought the house was going to collapse. "The beam collapses. Let's run away," the goblins shouted, throwing away everything they had and scrambling away. The brother left alone and came down the mountain with gold and silver treasures and bats. He became rich in making houses like a palace and delicious food with bats.
Incident 4. The older brother who got jealous and went to get a bat
이 소식을 들은 욕심쟁이 형은 샘이 잔뜩 나서, 자기도 도깨비 방망이를 얻어 큰 부자가 되어야겠다면서 산에 올라가 나무하는 척을 했어요. 역시나 땍때구루루, 개암이 한 톨씩 굴러 왔지요. 그런데 아우와 달리 욕심쟁이 형은 개암 세개를 전부 자기가 먹으려고 마음먹고 주머니에 넣어 뒀어요. 어둑어둑 밤이 되자 형은 아우가 알려 준 빈집을 찾아 냉큼 들어갔고, 대들보 위에 숨어 도깨비들이 오기만을 기다렸어요. 물론 아우처럼 개암도 입 안에 물고 말이죠.
The greedy older brother heard the news, he soon went up the mountain and pretended to cut the trees. As expected, the nuts rolled over one by one. Unlike his brother, however, the greedy brother put them in his pocket, determined to eat all of them by himself. At night in the dark, he quickly went into the empty house that his brother told him, and hid on the beam and waited for the goblins to come. Of course, like his brother, he have a nut in his mouth.
Incident 5. The older brother who is scolded by goblins and reflects on himself
으슥한 밤이 되자 도깨비들이 와르르 몰려와서는 저마다 방망이를 들고 시끌시끌 놀았어요. 형은 ‘이때다!’ 하고 얼른 개암을 와작!하고 꽉 깨물었지요. 형은 이제 도깨비들이 도망갈 것이고, 그럼 저 방망이는 모두 다 자신의 것이라며 벌써부터 기대하고 있었어요. 그런데 이게 웬일이지요? 도깨비들이 도망가기는커녕 방망이를 들고 대들보로 우르르 올라와서는, 지난번에 우리 방망이를 훔친 도둑놈이 또 왔으니 어서 잡아 혼꾸멍을 내주자며 형을 끌어냈어요! 그리고서는 방망이로 마구 두드리면서 밤새 형의 몸을 홑이불처럼 납작하게, 뱀장어처럼 길쭉하게 만들다가 새벽이 밝아 올 때쯤에야 돌아갔지요. 만신창이가 된 형은 어기적어기적 집으로 돌아와서, 자신의 욕심 많은 심보를 뉘우치며 아우처럼 착하게 살았답니다.
At night, goblins came rushing in and played loudly with their bats. The older brother hurried up and bit the nut. He was already expecting that the goblins would run away soon, and that bat and treasures would all be his.
But what's going on here? Rather than running away, the goblins rushed up to the beam with their bats, and dragged him out, saying, "There's the thief who stole our bats last time, so let's scold him!"
Then, they beat his brother's body with a bat to make his body as flat as a blanket and as long as an eel all night, and then returned when dawn broke. The ruined brother came back to his house and lived like his younger brother, repenting for his greedy past.
