Incident 1. The appearance of hundreds of rats
옛날, 독일에는 하멜른이라는 한적하고 평화로운 마을이 있었어요. 어느 날부터인가 하멜른에는 엄청난 쥐 떼가 몰려들어 온 마을을 뒤덮었어요. 쥐는 집 안까지 들어와 닥치는 대로 음식들을 먹어 버렸고, 빗자루로 쫓아내도 도망치는 시늉만 하고 다시 나타났지요. 마을 사람들은 궁리 끝에 다른 마을에서 고양이를 데려왔지만, 쥐 떼들은 무리를 지어 오히려 고양이에게 덤벼들었어요. 쥐들은 점점 더 빠르게 음식을 다 먹어치웠고, 시장과 마을 사람들은 마을 회관에 모여 쥐 떼를 없앨 대책을 함께 이야기했답니다.
Once upon a time, there was a quiet and peaceful village called Hameln in Germany. One day, hundreds of rats covered the whole village. The rats came into the house and ate all the food, and even if people kicked out with a broom, they pretended to run away and reappeared.
The villagers picked up the cat from another village after deliberation, but the rats flocked and pounced on the cat. They ate up food faster and faster, and the mayor and the villagers gathered in the town hall to talk about measures to get rid of them.
Incident 2. The appearance of the Pied Piper
마을 사람들은 소리 높여 시장에게 항의하며 쥐를 없앨 방법을 찾아 달라고 부탁했어요. 하지만 시장님도 좋은 생각이 떠오르지 않는 것은 마찬가지였지요. 시장님이 좋은 수가 없다며 무책임하게 대처하자, 마을 사람들은 시장님을 마구 몰아세웠어요.
누군가 쥐를 없애주면 좋겠다고 생각하던 바로 그때, 문을 두드리는 소리가 났어요. 문밖에는 이상하게 차려입은 낯선 사나이가 서 있었죠. 떠돌이 악사라고 자신을 소개한 사나이는 마을의 쥐 문제를 듣고 찾아왔다며, 자기가 하멜른의 쥐들을 다 없앨 수 있다고 말했어요.
The villagers complained loudly to the mayor that find a way to get rid of the rats. But the mayor couldn't come up with a good idea either. When he responded irresponsibly, saying that there was no good way, the villagers pushed him hard.
Just as thinking of someone to get rid of the rats, there was a knock on the door. Outside the door stood a strange dressed stranger. The man who introduced himself as a wandering musician, said he could solve the problem of the rats in Hameln.
Incident 3. A Transaction between the the Pied Piper and the Mayor
처음에 시장은 사나이의 말에 코웃음을 쳤지만, 사나이가 진지한 태도로 장난이 아니라며 자신의 능력을 믿어달라고 말하자, 점점 그에게 믿음이 가기 시작했어요. 사나이는 이미 다른 마을에서도 그가 가진 마법의 피리를 이용해서 딱정벌레 떼와 박쥐 떼를 없앤 적이 있었기 때문이죠.
사나이는 쥐를 없애는 대가로 천 냥을 요구했는데, 시장은 문제 없다는 듯이 고개를 끄덕이며, 약속대로 극성스러운 쥐들을 모두 없애 준다면 돈은 오천 냥이라도 주겠다며 간절하게 부탁했지요. 사나이는 그 약속 꼭 지켜 달라며 내일 해가 뜰 때 쥐들을 쫓아 주기로 했어요.
At first, the mayor snorted, but when the man said in a serious manner that he was not joking, he began to believe in his abilities. Because he had already used his magic pipe in other villages to get rid of beetles and bats.
The man asked for 1,000 nyangs in exchange, and the mayor nodded and said he could give even 5,000 nyangs if he got rid of all the flock of rats as promised. The man got confirmation and promised to chase the mice when the sun rises tomorrow.
Incident 4. The man who kept his promises and the man who did not
이른 아침, 사나이는 피리를 불며 힘차게 거리를 걷기 시작했어요. 그러자 곳곳에 흩어져 있던 쥐들이 피리 소리에 이끌려 우르르 거리로 쏟아져 나오더니 일제히 사나이의 뒤를 따라갔어요. 사나이는 하멜른을 빠져나와 흥겹게 피리를 불며 강가로 첨벙첨벙 걸어 들어갔지요. 쥐들도 역시 강물로 뛰어들더니, 전부 깊은 물속으로 빠져 죽었답니다.
쥐들이 사라져 기뻐하는 마을 사람들 앞에 피리 부는 사나이가 나타나 돈 오천 냥을 요구하자, 사람들은 차가운 표정을 지으며 그럴 수는 없다고 말했어요. 사나이는 약속을 지키라며 천 냥이라도 달라고 했지만 시장은 쥐들은 이미 죽었으니 자신들의 볼일은 끝났고, 마을엔 식량이 없어져 먹을 것을 살 돈도 없으니 이제 떠나라며 고작 오십 냥을 건네주고 사나이를 막무가내로 내쫓으려 했지요.
Early in the morning, the man began to walk vigorously down the street, playing the magic pipe. Then, the rats scattered all over the village poured out into the street, led by the sound of the pipe, and followed the man in unison. The man walked out of Hameln and splashed into the river, playing the pipe cheerfully. The rats also jumped into the river, and all of them drowned in the deep water.
The piped piper appeared in front of the villagers who were happy that the rats disappeared and asked for 5,000 nyangs, but people resolutely refused. The man asked for 1,000 nyangs to keep their promise, but the mayor handed him with only 50 nyangs, saying, "The rats are already dead, so our business is over, and we have no food and money.“
피리 부는 사나이는 배은망덕한 하멜른 마을 사람들에게 틀림없이 거짓말의 대가를 치를 테니 후회하지 말라고 화를 내며 떠났어요. 그날 밤, 쥐 떼로부터 자유로워진 마을 사람들은 모처럼 편안히 잠을 잤어요. 이윽고 아침이 되자 피리 부는 사나이가 나타나 아이들에게만 들리는 마법의 피리를 불었어요. 거짓말을 모르는 착한 아이들은 사나이를 따라 정직한 나라로 가는 동굴로 들어갔어요. 다리를 다친 한 명을 제외한 모든 아이들이 들어가자, 커다란 바위가 입구를 막아 버렸어요. 남은 한 명의 아이가 마을로 돌아가 자초지종을 설명하자, 어른들은 동굴에 찾아가 실수를 빌며 애원했지만 피리 부는 사나이의 굳어진 마음을 되돌릴 수도, 아이들을 다시 돌려받을 수도 없었지요. 하멜른 마을사람들은 약속을 지키지 않은 것을 두고두고 후회했답니다.
The Pied Piper left the ungrateful Hameln villagers in anger, saying, "I'm sure I'll pay for your lies, don't regret it." That night, the villagers slept comfortably after a long time. Soon in the morning, the piped piper appeared again and played a magic pipe that only children could hear. The good children, who didn't know lies, followed the man into a cave to the honest country.
When all but one child with an injured leg entered, a large rock blocked the entrance. When the remaining one child returned to the village and explained the whole story, the adults went to the cave and begged for their mistakes, but the piper didn't turn back his mind. Hameln villagers regretted not keeping their promise for a long time.
