Incident 1. Sun Wukong, the Monkey King
먼 옛날, 오래국이라는 나라에 있는 화과산에는 커다란 바위가 있었어요. 어느 날, 바위가 깨지더니 둥그런 돌덩어리가 튀어나와 곧 돌 원숭이로 변했어요. 돌 원숭이는 원숭이들을 위해 깊은 폭포에 들어가 수렴동이라는 좋은 터전을 찾고 임금님이 되었어요.
부하들과 살아가던 돌 원숭이는 신선이 되어 영원히 살기 위해 한 신선으로부터 여러 가지 도술을 익히고, '손오공'이라는 이름을 얻었어요. 손오공은 자신의 재주를 뽐내고 자랑하는 것을 좋아했는데, 그것을 옳지 못하다고 여긴 스승님은 손오공을 내쫓았지요. 구름을 타고 수렴동으로 돌아와 보니, 못된 요괴가 원숭이들을 괴롭히고 있었어요. 손오공이 자기 몸의 털을 뽑아 훅! 하고 불었더니 털이 수많은 원숭이가 되어 단번에 요괴를 물리쳤어요.
Once upon a time, there was a big rock in Hwagwasan Mountain in a country called ‘Oraeguk’. One day, a rock broke and a round stone popped out, and soon turned into a stone monkey. The stone monkey went into a deep waterfall for the monkeys, found a great base called Suryeom-dong, and became a king.
The stone monkey, who had lived with his subordinates, practiced various Taoist magic and got the name "Sun Wukong" from the mentor god to become a god and live forever.
Sun Wukong liked to show off his talents, but his mentor kicked him out because he thought it was not right. When Sun Wukong rode the clouds back to Suryeom-dong, a bad monster was bothering the monkeys. When he plucked his fur and blew it, his fur became a numerous monkey and defeated the monster at once.
Incident 2. Arrogant Sun Wukong
손오공은 원숭이 마을을 지키기 위해 용궁의 보물인 여의봉이라는 무기를 얻어왔어요. 여의봉은 귓속에 들어갈 만큼 작아지기도, 태산만큼 커지기도 하는 신비한 막대인데, 용왕은 손오공의 힘이 대단한 것을 알고, 할 수 없이 보물을 내주었지요. 여의봉을 손에 넣게 된 손오공이 행패를 부리고 다니자, 옥황상제는 손오공에게 필마온이라는 벼슬을 내려 말을 돌보게 했어요. 필마온을 높은 벼슬로 알고 일하던 손오공은, 옥황상제가 사실상 마구간지기나 다름없는 벼슬로 자신을 골탕 먹인 것을 알고는 화가 나 소란을 일으켰지요.
To protect the monkey village, Sun Wukong obtained a weapon called ‘Yeoui-bong’, a treasure of the Underwater Palace. It's a mysterious stick that can be small enough to fit in the ear or as big as a mountain. The Dragon King was forced to give it to him because he knew the great power of Sun Wukong. When Sun Wukong became violent with Yeoui-bong, the Jade Emperor gave him a position called ‘Pilmaon’ to take care of horses. Sun Wukong, who worked knowing Pilmaon as a high official, became angry and made a fuss when he found out that the Jade Emperor actually served him a trick.
Incident 3. Sun Wukong got punishment
옥황상제는 장수를 불러 건방진 손오공을 혼내 주라고 명령했어요. 하늘나라 군대가 손오공에게 덤볐지만 그의 도술을 당할 수가 없었지요. 그때 하늘에서 한 신선이 고리를 던져 손오공을 제압했어요. 잡혀 온 손오공 앞에 부처님이 나타나, 손오공이 자신의 손가락을 벗어날 수 있다면 하늘나라를 그에게 주고, 못한다면 벌을 주는 내기를 하자고 제안했어요. 손오공은 구름을 타고 세상 끝까지 가서, 기둥에 이름을 써놓은 뒤 의기양양하게 승리를 확신했어요. 하지만 그 기둥은 부처님의 손가락이었고, 손오공은 부적을 붙인 바위산에 갇혀 훌륭한 스님이 올 때까지 오백 년을 기다려야만 했죠.
The Great Jade Emperor called the general and ordered him to scold the arrogant Monkey King. The armies of heaven attacked him, but they couldn't defend his magic. At that time, a god threw a ring from the sky and overpowered Sun Wukong. A Buddha appeared in front of him, and suggested that he would give him the heaven if he could escape his finger, or punish him if he couldn't. Sun Wukong rode the clouds to the end of the world, wrote his name on a pillar, and was confident of victory. But the pillar was the Buddha's finger, and Sun Wukong was trapped in a rocky mountain with a talisman and had to wait 500 years for a great monk to come.
Incident 4. Sun Wukong became a disciple of a monk
마침내 삼장 법사라는 스님이 지나가자, 손오공은 스님의 제자가 되겠다며 빌었어요. 스님이 손오공을 도와주자마자 손오공은 약속을 어기고 달아나려 했지만, 금테 고리가 손오공의 머리를 아프게 꽉 조여서 하는 수 없이 천축국으로 가는 스님의 여행에 함께하게 되었어요. 그들은 처녀들을 납치하던 요괴 저팔계와 강에서 사람들을 공격하는 요괴 사오정을 만났지만 물리치고 제자로 만들었어요. 다함께 길을 가던 중 속임수에 능한 호리병 요괴를 만났어요. 요괴들은 편찮으신 할아버지를 산으로 변신시켜 손오공을 제압하고, 대답을 하면 빨려들어가는 호리병으로 또 손오공을 물리쳤지만 손오공이 파리로 둔갑해 호리병에서 탈출한 다음 요괴들을 불러, 그 말에 대답한 요괴들을 다시 호리병에 가두고 길을 떠날 수 있었어요.
When a monk named Samjang finally passed by, Sun Wukong prayed that he would become a disciple of the monk. As soon as the monk helped him, he tried to run away and broke his promise, but he was forced to join the monk's trip to Cheonchukguk because the gold ring tightened his head painfully.
They met the goblin Jeopalgye who kidnapped the girls and the goblin Saojeong who attacked people in the river, but they defeated them and made them disciples.
While walking together, they met a gourd bottle monster who was good at deceiving. The monster turned a sick grandfather into a mountain, overpowered Sun Wukong, and defeated him again with a gourd bottle that suck in when he answered. But Sun Wukong, the Monkey King turned into a fly, escaped from the bottle, and lock up the monster who replied back.
Incident 5. Sun Wukong used his talents correctly
천축국 도착 직전에 있는 큰 산에는 불이 활활 타오르고 있었어요. 불을 끄기 위해서는 파초동에 사는 쇠부채 공주의 파초선 부채가 필요했지요. 손오공이 찾아가 보았지만 단칼에 거절당한 데다 부채질을 당해 땅 끝까지 날아가 버렸지요. 고민하던 손오공은 쇠부채 공주의 남편 우마왕으로 둔갑해 부채를 빌려간 다음 달아났어요. 진짜 우마왕이 쫓아와 공격했지만 손오공은 여의봉으로 우마왕을 물리쳤지요. 파초선으로 산의 불을 끄고 결국 천축국에 돌아온 삼장 법사 일행에게 부처님은 삼장법사에게 불경을 주고 손오공, 저팔계, 사오정을 칭찬하며 앞으로도 착하게 살아야 한다고 당부했답니다.

After a long consideration, he turned into her husband King Uma, borrowed the fan, and ran away. The real King Uma chased and attacked him, but Sun Wukong defeated him with Yeoui-bong. Finally the fire extinguished, the Buddha gave Samjang Buddhist scriptures, praised Sun Wukong, Jeopalgye, and Saojeong, and request continue to live a good life.
